New Iran spy station raises terror attack fears

A suspected Iranian “numbers station” has started broadcasting encrypted messages to suspected agents via shortwave radio.

The spy station was detected yesterday and will stoke fears that the regime is ending out orders for retaliatory terrorist attacks.

Numbers stations came to prominence in the Cold War and have been used by many nations to send encrypted messages to agents working undercover in enemy countries.

The broadcasts are typically consist of a voice reading out sequences of seemingly random numbers which agents then write down and decrypt using keys contained in so-called one-time pads.
